Mo Must Do S Should do C Could do oW Won ’ t do MoSCoW METHOD What is it? This system is used as a way of prioritising tasks when developing ideas for new implementations. The acronym stands for: Must do, Should do, Could do and Won’t do. Requirements considered a Must have to be included for the project to be a success, whereas requirements considered a Won’t will determine the implementation a failure. The team will aim to deliver all the Must do, Should do and Could do, however if the timescale or resource is limited, Should and Could may be deferred.

Why is it useful with the Charter? It is a good way to for organisations to develop ideas and select priorities for meeting each area of the charter whilst making sure the crucial elements for each standard are included. Task Using the MoSCoW system, identify what actions you could take toward the standards of a particular area of the charter. Each table will work on a different area. Mental Health and Wellbeing example MoSCoW METHOD Must do – essential actions… Should do – it will make life easier if… Could do – it would be nice if… Won’t do – it will fail if… Review the training offered to managers on mental health awareness and look at take-up across the organisation … training is evaluated for usefulness and how well equipped managers feel to tackle mental health issues following training. Staff views are collected on how well supported they feel on mental health issues. … some training could be made mandatory for managers and roll-out could be as comprehensive as possible. … we just rely on the fact that training is offered, without checking how well utilised it is and how useful the actual courses offered are.

Healthy Eating example MoSCoW METHOD Must do – essential actions… Should do – it will make life easier if… Could do – it would be nice if… Won’t do – it will fail if… 7.1 Review the current offer to staff throughout the organisation / on different sites to ensure that healthier foods are offered and clearly identified and promoted … our catering contracts include clauses around healthier eating, so that this offer is the default one. … we could incentivise healthier choices by having pricing structures which favour healthier foods. A healthier food offer could be available to all staff, at all sites, regardless of the time of day they are working … we don’t specify in catering contracts that there is an expectation that healthier foods are provided as the basis for all provision, including catering for events / meetings

Corporate Support example MoSCoW METHOD Must do – essential actions… Should do – it will make life easier if… Could do – it would be nice if… Won’t do – it will fail if… 1.1 Assess how effective out staff appreciation / reward mechanisms are – are staff aware of them? What do we know about whether or not staff feel appreciated? …. we have a means to gather how staff are appreciated across the organisation and which methods are most effective / popular. We should monitor appraisal take-up throughout the organisation … we could introduce some more innovative and regular staff appreciation schemes … if we don’t monitor the impact of our methods of staff appreciation, we won’t know how staff are really feeling.

Physical Activity example MoSCoW METHOD Must do – essential actions… Should do – it will make life easier if… Could do – it would be nice if… Won’t do – it will fail if… 6.1 Review the aspects of the working environment which encourage or facilitate physical activity eg showers. Assess if there are any environmental barriers to being physically active. … staff are encouraged to feedback on what would make it easier for them to become more physically active. …. we could introduce something innovative and engaging to encourage staff participation in physical activity e.g walking / stair climbing challenges … the physical environment means that the default is to be less physically active e.g is the lifts are more prominent than the stairs

Alcohol and Substance Misuse example MoSCoW METHOD Must do – essential actions… Should do – it will make life easier if… Could do – it would be nice if… Won’t do – it will fail if… 8.1 Review existing code of conduct on alcohol and substance misuse and how it is communicated to staff. … we ensure that universal methods of communicating information on alcohol and substance misuse are used e.g induction training … we could use engaging means of having a workplace conversation around alcohol / substance misuse e.g web-based assessment, staff events focusing on alcohol awareness ….. we assume that having a policy alone is enough.
