Laura Hanson, who works for the Giants led a project to use funds from the National Lottry to raise awareness of the clubs amazing history.

She said: “We plan to engage people from 7 to 97 and to increase their sense of civic identity through to town's rugby league heritage."

Huddersfield Giants can trace their roots back a long way! The club was founded in 1864.

What was happening in the world in 1864? In America a bitter Civil War was being fought between the north and the south.

In Sheffield 250 people were killed in a flood when Dale Dyke Dam burst its walls.

In America a legendary railway engineer called Casey Jones was born.

In London the first ever Fish and Chip shop opened for business.

The International Red Cross was founded.

Where it all began This is the George Hotel in Huddersfield. At a meeting here in 1895 led to the birth of Rugby League. Huddersfield is the birthplace of Rugby League Football.

The Huddersfield team before the First World War became known as ‘the Team of all Talents’ In 1914 they won all four trophies on offer!

Huddersfield’s captain was Harold Wagstaff who many believe was the greatest player ever to play the game of Rugby League.

He was still only fifteen when he first played in the Huddersfield first team. By the age of seventeen he was representing Great Britain. He went on to play for the club for 19 years. He made 436 appearances. He scored 176 tries.

Australian Albert Rosenfeld was in that great team. He still holds the record for the number of tries scored in a single season... … 80 tries in 1913-14.

Lionel Cooper was a star at Huddersfield between 1947 and 1955. He scored 420 tries for the club including 10 in one match against Keighley in 1951.

Tommy Smales was a great captain of Huddersfield leading them to winning the Championship in 1961-62. The club have won the Championship 7 times.

Huddersfield have won the Challenge Cup final at Wembley six times. The last time was in 1953 when they beat St Helens.

The Giants got to two Challenge Cup finals in 2006 and 2009 but lost both times.

In recent times stars like Danny Brough have helped the Giants to become one of the best teams in the modern game.
