Strictly speaking only co-ordinating conjunctions are used to create compound sentences. There are only 7 co-ordinating conjunctions: for and nor but or yet so (FANBOYS). The subordinating conjunction because (and its alternative as and since) is included here as it is commonly used as an example conjunction from Entry 2 upwards.

Warm Up Get into pairs and draw up a list of punctuation rules. Include rules for: Capital letters Full stops Commas Question marks Exclamation marks Any other punctuation you think is important

Learning Outcomes Today you will: Write in complete sentences Punctuate correctly, so meaning is clear Use a capital letter for proper nouns Spell correctly a range of common words Check your spelling of last week’s words

Conjunctions Conjunctions are joining words. Examples include: asorsoandbutsince because Use a conjunction to join two simple sentences. Example: He wants his hair coloured. He’s allergic to some of the dyes. He wants a colour but he’s allergic to some of the dyes. Two sentences joined together like this become a compound sentence.

Client Details You jot down these phone messages. Turn them into full sentences for the stylists. Use conjunctions in some of your sentences. asorsoandbutsince because Maxwell, 47, crew cut or grade 2, new customer. Tracy, 29, hair cut, colour, blow dry for party tonight. Mabel, 78, rinse and set, likes copy of People’s Friend to read when under dryer. Raoul, 21, allergic to peroxide, wants highlights, unsure of style / colour. Angela, 43, wants perm, very fine hair, very brittle hair, needs split ends trimming. May, 81, lonely (widowed last year), likes a chat, set, cup of tea. Marcus, 34, last minute appointment (job interview), dry cut.

Sample answers (many others are possible). Maxwell is age 47 and is a new customer. He wants a crew cut or a grade 2. Tracy, age 29, is going to a party tonight so she wants a cut, colour, and blow dry. Mabel is age 78 and she needs a rinse and set. She likes copy of People’s Friend to read when she’s under dryer. Raoul, age 21, wants highlights but he’s allergic to peroxide. He’s unsure about style and colour. Angela is 43 and wants a perm. She needs her split ends trimming as she has very fine and brittle hair. May, 81, wants a set. She’s very lonely since being widowed last year. She loves a chat and a cup of tea. Marcus, age 34, wants a dry cut because he’s got a job interview later this morning.
