Energy and Forces Study Guide Check page 1. Energy- the ability to cause change Kinetic-energy of motion With kinetic energy-car moving, person running, wind Without kinetic energy-parked car, person sitting, rock on Mt. ↑ speed↑ kinetic energy ↑mass ↑ kinetic energy Potential-stored energy Chemical-stored in matter (food, gas, firewood, candle) Stored Mechanical-stored in tension (bow, sling shot, windup toy) Gravitational- stored in height (book in shelf, roller coaster in hill) Work- the amount if energy needed to move an object over a distance.

Check page 2 Radiant-travels in waves, flashlight Thermal- vibration of atoms, sun Sound-movement in waves, horn Electrical-movement in electrons, lightning Mechanical-motion energy, wind Nuclear-stored in nucleus of atoms, sun The sun is the source of radiant and thermal energy. It is also the source of wind (mechical) and plants (chemical).

check page 3 Kinetic Potential A 100% 0% B 50% 50% C 0% 100% D 25% 75% E 100% 0% It has less gravitational energy and is moving faster so the kinetic energy is increasing. Radiant →chemical electrical→ mechanical Gravitational → mechanical → sound → thermal

Check page 4 Heat- the movement of thermal energy from higher temperatures to lower temperatures Thermal energy flow-from hot to cold All material must be the same temperature Convection-heat moving by warm gas/liquids rising and cooler material sinking, water in a pool/atmosphere Conduction-heat transfer by touch, spoon in a hot chocolate, handshake Radiation-heat transfer by light waves, sun, fire, light bulb
