Monthly Process Report - November Wiske, S.

Collaboration with Mentor

This month, I contacted my mentor over the phone. I told him what I had done. He said I was ahead of time. He said that it might be a good idea to practice on a lathe before doing any actual work. He said I could use a smaller bat on our neighbor’s smaller lathe. My mentor also said he would look for a full scaled lathe for me.

What I Learned This month, I decided that I would have a 32 inch bat. I learned what needed for the dimensions of the bat. I chunked the bat into 4 inch sections and then marked it. These 4 inch sections will determine the diameter for the barrel, handle and knob. The thickest part should only be about 2 ½ inches in diameter.

Me measuring out the sections of my bat and indicating the hash marks I’ve made.

Goals Next month, I plan to start the process of making a practice bat bat. To make this happen, I would need to first put the bat on the lathe. The lathe would spin the bat so I could carve away at the bat. I would make sure each spot would be chiseled down to the exact right spot. Hopefully, I will have this done and I will be able to start making the actual bats.
