INTRODUCTION Chirp-chirp, What’s that sound? That’s the sound of a cicada looking for its mate. But you might not recognize them because they spend most of their life underground. Come with me to find out more!

WHAT DOES THE CICADA LOOK LIKE? All cicadas have large bodies and six legs. Their wings are transparent and very large. They have two large eyes and three small eyes in between. Adults have four wings that they hold folded over their back.
5
WHAT IS THE CICADA’S HABITAT? Cicadas live all over the world. They live underground most of the time. Adult cicadas live above ground on grass or trees.
6
WHAT DOES THE CICADA EAT AND HOW DOES IT HUNT? Babies stay alive by eating sap from tree roots. Adults mostly eat tree sap.
7
ALL ABOUT CICADA BABIES. Their babies start out as tiny wingless larvae. The wingless larvae are called nymphs. Nymphs stay alive by eating tree sap. Nymphs stay underground for 2 to 17 years.

FUN FACTS There are many cicadas in the world. Nymphs burrow up to 2 feet into the ground. Adults can be up to 2.25 inches long. Mama cicadas can lay between 400 and 600 eggs at a time. Nymphs stay underground for 2 to 17 years.
