Dr Anna Tarrant a.tarrant@leeds.ac.uk School of Sociology and Social Policy @dratarrant/@menpovcare ‘Getting out of the swamp’: Realist research and qualitative secondary analysis
2
Title The project “Men, poverty and lifetimes of care” Two phases: Qualitative Secondary Analysis of two existing Timescapes datasets; Following Young Fathers and Intergenerational Exchange Primary data collection – multiple interviews + mapping and photovoice
3
Title The realities of research design Maxwell (2012; 2013) An interactive/systemic model TIMESCAPES DATASETS
4
Title Conceptual Framework Timescapes datasets an available resource on condition of receiving funding (part of the research environment), Qualitative Secondary Analysis part of the development of the conceptual framework for my study, Analysis allowed me to create a model of male care responsibilities in low-income localities, This model subject to revision in light of new evidence or theories in another empirical project.
5
Title Conceptual Map Following Young Fathers Intergenerational Exchange LOW-INCOME LOCALITY EDUCATION SERVICES (CAFCASS) THIRD SECTOR SERVICES Worklessness: Low-pay, no pay work cycles Prison Child(ren) Relationship breakdown Become kinship carer Worklessness: Retirement/redun dancy Ill health Peer pressures Changing policy backdrop Familial and personal relationships Social service intervention Informal economy Insecure housing
6
Title ‘Getting out of the swamp’ Research Proposal Meetings with third sector workers/gatekeepers Qualitative Secondary Analysis of IGE and FYF Meetings with third sector workers/gatekeepers Qualitative Secondary Analysis of IGE and FYF Literature Review/Conceptual mapping/refinement of project goals Development of document of themes from secondary analysis Knowledge Exchange Workshop bringing relevant stakeholders together to prioritize themes Refine questions in light of stakeholder priorities and Timescapes analysis
7
Title What did it add? Unlike the literature review or other strategies of synthesis such as the meta-analysis, metasynthesis, meta-studies, systematic reviews and narrative analysis, secondary analysis extends this process through the re-use of raw data (Heaton, 2004), Sampling framework is explicitly informed by theoretical insights from secondary analysis of these data on teenage fathers and mid-life grandparents. Developed partial theories and hypotheses about a particular research problem, while also supporting the production of new research questions and theories to be investigated in another primary empirical study
8
Title Conclusions QSA might be productively used to support the development of a critical conceptual framework of a study, which has in turn informed the study goals, research questions, methods and validity, It is a ‘real’ entity that has facilitated the exploration of the actual mechanisms operating in these low-income localities, There are issues with working within and across existing QL datasets but the evidence can be used to identify partial or feeble theories for further testing
