Bushing Material The bushings are made of G11CR. However, it has been shown that deflections (and bolt stresses) due to shear loads not reacted by friction can be reduced by using SS bushings. Are we planning to use SS bushings anywhere? Proposal- Use 316SS bushings for new inboard bolts, top/bottom bolts, and around large openings. Interface A-B
2
Benefit- eliminate floating shim, take bending load off studs in threaded region. Proposal- Estimate time required to add additional counterbore, evaluate install procedure. Counterbore w/ Bushing bushing extends beyond shim friction surface
3
Washer Assemblies Spherical washers will not be used under the Supernuts because the Supernuts themselves can accommodate non-perpendicularity. Proposal- use ¼-in Titanium washer in place of spherical washer set. Use Supernuts everywhere, including through bolt assemblies. No change in stud length.
4
Locking Features Proposal- use welded tab to prevent loosening
5
Preload Monitoring Stud preloads will be monitored during assembly and operation using a UT device, either one that we already own (if it can be made to work) or a new one. The exceptions are the studs in the inboard regions which are inaccessible following assembly. We would dearly like to be able to monitor the preloads for these studs during operation. Should special studs can be ordered to provide this functionality?
6
Bolted Shims Proposal- use multiple shim shapes (~20) to increase coverage, incl shell interface (em load path). Add protrusion (tab) for handling. Alumina coating both sides. Round edges 1/16 min.
