Ten Misconceptions About Africa

"I've never really wanted to go to Japan. Simply because I don't like eating fish. And I know that's very popular out there in Africa.” - Britney Spears What?? Japan isn’t in Africa?

Really, Britney! (Did she sleep through 7 th grade World Studies???) Africa is home to a billion people, about 1/7 of the world’s population. Africa is the second-largest continent on earth. Africa has ¼ of all of the independent countries in the world. Africa has the longest river in the world. Africa has the most languages of any other continent in the world. Africa is believed to have the most minerals of any continent in the world.

No, it isn't full of dangerous, wild animals on the loose. It also isn't just a vast expanse of arid land. Africa - our planet's second largest continent, has been battling misconceptions like these for years. Let’s try to “clear the air...”

Myth: Africa is a country. Fact: Africa is a CONTINENT with 54 countries and Western Sahara.

Myth: Africa is a huge hot, dry place. Fact: It regularly snows in some regions of Africa

Myth: Africa is a huge rainforest/desert/plain, etc. Fact: Africa has incredible geographic diversity!

Myth: Africa’s history wasn’t very civilized. Fact: Africa’s history is filled with kingdoms, rulers, trading and treasures!

Myth: All Africans live in villages. Fact: Many cities like Cairo and Nairobi are home to millions of people.

Myth: Wild animals roam everywhere. Fact: Much of the wildlife is now protected in Africa’s game reserves and national parks.

Example: Protected areas for animals just in Kenya.

Myth: Most Africans carry spears and shields for protection. Fact: Nope. Just for the tourists’ photo-ops.

Myth: Africans don’t have any health care and get many fatal diseases. Fact: African healthcare workers are trying very hard to manage the diseases.

Myth: All Africans are dark-skinned. Fact: Some native Africans descended from Europeans and Asians.

Myth: Africa doesn’t do much trade with the other continents. Fact: Partially true. Africa has lots of trade challenges, including geography, money, and modernization.
