3 The words you know and use are important for three reasons: 1.They shape your thinking; 2.They influence how you communicate with your world; and 3.They affect how the world responds to you.

4 How to improve your vocabulary: By studying new subjects Having new experiences Increasing the amount of reading that you do and Listening carefully to other people.

5 Understanding Word Parts

6 Some English words such as ground, age, and clock are called base words. They cannot be broken down into word parts. However, many English words are made of – prefixes, – suffixes, and – roots.

7 Unicyclist combines… The prefix uni (meaning one) The root cycle (meaning wheel) The suffix ist (meaning a person who) – A unicyclist is a person who rides a one-wheeled vehicle.

8 Hemispheric combines… The prefix hemi (meaning half) The root sphere (meaning ball) The suffix ic (meaning nature of) – As the orbiter rounded the moon, the sun’s rays made the earth look like a beautiful hemispheric spaceship.
