Act I Othello OEA Response How does Shakespeare develop your assigned theme/motif to develop a character, conflict, relationship, setting, or idea in Act 1 of Othello? Use at least 3 examples of your theme/motif as supporting evidence for your claim above.
2
Observation Begin with a topic sentence/observation statement: In Act One of the play Othello, Shakespeare uses [insert your theme] to develop [describe a character, conflict, relationship, setting, or idea]. Example: In Act One of the play Othello, Shakespeare uses the theme of public versus private to establish the internal conflict of the characters.
3
Evidence Use context to introduce each quote/example. Follow each quote with a proper citation revealing the act, scene, and line numbers. Example: When Iago explains his philosophy of how men should act, he says, "I serve him to serve himself" (1.1, 34-35).
4
Analysis Provide an analysis to prove your observation statement. Should be at least two sentences that do not restate the quote. Example: Iago establishes early in the play through a private discussion with Roderigo his hatred for Othello's decision to promote Cassio over Iago. His anger fuels him to make this paradoxical statement revealing that his false loyalty to Othello will ultimately help him succeed.
5
Transition Word To add similar proof: Furthermore, in addition, moreover, also, secondly For themes with versus, you may want to show contrasting proof. If that's the case use these transitions: however, on the other hand, but
