1
Bellwork What does it mean when someone says so-and-so “is dense”
2
Bellwork How is mass and volume related to density?
3
Bellwork How is mass and volume related to density? Density is the mass per unit volume Amount of mass packed into a certain volume
4
Matter and Density - Review What is matter? – Anything that has mass and takes up space What is mass? – Amount of matter in an object What is volume? – Amount of space an object takes up
5
Density An object’s mass per volume Mass divided by volume Density = mass / volume
6
Density Example #1 An object has mass of 2 g and volume of 4 mL. What is its density?
7
Density Example #2 Lead has density of 11.3 g/cm 3. What is the volume of a block of lead with a mass of 282.5 g? 25 cm 3
8
Let’s Demonstrate!! We are going to use a graduated cylinder to measure the mass of a certain volume of water Then we will plot the data ( mass vs. volume )
9
Plot the Data
10
Density of Water 1 g / mL !!
11
Comparing Densities Let’s drop stuff in our water!! BLOOP!! Why do certain things sink and other things not?
12
Comparing Densities Let’s drop stuff in our water!! BLOOP!! Why do certain things sink and other things not? Some things are more dense than water Others are less dense
13
Oil & Water When you mix Which one is more dense than the other?
