HS Department Chair’s Meeting December 7, 2011 Georgia Tech Research Institute

What do you know about CCGPS?

Why Change? Video Clip Shifting from graduation rate to college and career readiness.

Algebra Process Standards Number and Operations Common Core Georgia 6-8 Performance Standards Measurement Geometry Algebra Data Analysis and Probability Functions The Number System Expressions and Equations Statistics and Probability Geometry Mathematical Practices Ratios and Proportional Reasoning 7 6 - 8 8

CCGPS 9-12 Number and Operations Geometry Algebra Data Analysis and Probability Number and Quantity Algebra Functions Modeling Geometry Mathematical Practices Process Standards Statistics and Probability

CCGPS Math Practices “The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators at all levels should seek to develop in their students. These practices rest on important ‘processes and proficiencies’ with longstanding importance in mathematics education.” (CCSS, 2010)

SMP Which of the Standards for Mathematical Practice can you identify? How have you begun implementing these in your classroom instruction?

1.Make sense of complex problems and persevere in solving them. 2.Reason abstractly and quantitatively. 3.Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. 4.Model with mathematics. 5.Use appropriate tools strategically. 6.Attend to precision. 7.Look for and make use of structure. 8.Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Standards for (Student) Mathematical Practice

Models for SMP Connections to Literacy Activity 9 Quote: “It is suggested that we shift the emphasis from teaching to learning, from our experience to the children's, in fact, from our world to their world.” Zoltan Dienes

Coordinate Algebra is the first in a sequence of three high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of algebra with correlated statistics applications and a bridge to the second course through coordinate geometric topics. AlgebraGeometryProbability / Statistics Algebraic Expressions Solving Equations & Inequalities in One Variable Linear Equations & Inequalities Exponential Relationships (integer exponents only) Functions & Function Notation Models of Exponential & Linear Functions Arithmetic & Geometric Sequences Slope & Distance on the Coordinate Plane Transformations in the coordinate plane Interpret/Represent/ Compare Data Summarize Data Fit Functions to Data (limit to linear & exponential) Interpret Linear Models for Data
