3. 3 ROMAN ARCHITECTURE  The word ‘classical’ is often used to describe Roman architecture.  In recent centuries, many buildings have followed the classical style of architecture. What words come to mind when you think of Roman Architecture? What word comes to mind when you think of Roman Architecture?

4. 4 ARCHITECTURE  The Romans were great builders. They discovered and used concrete.  They used pillars, rounded arches and domes in their buildings. What modern day buildings have these Different features??? Why was this discovery so important for building? Rome Wasn’t Built In A Day

5. ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME The Romans started to build roads for transporting goods between cities and countries 400,000km of roads were built by the Romans Roads were paved and layered with stone, with drainage on either side

VIA SACRA The Via Sacra, Sacred Road, was the main road into any Roman city It ran up through the centre of the city and usually under a very large arch, that usually represented a great battle or emperor, into the forum When a victorious army returned from winning they would march up the via sacra to cheering crowds and the slaves marched behind

7. ROMAN FORUM The forum was the main market place and business centre The ancient Romans went to do their Banking Trading Shopping Marketing It was also a place for public speaking especially those who were members of the assembly The forum was used for festivals and religious ceremonies

10. 10 ROMAN ART  Wealthy Romans had ‘wall paintings’ in their houses called murals.  These paintings were frescoes (paintings done on wet plaster). What do you think was the subject matter of these paintings?

11. 11 ROMAN SCULPTURE  Sculpture was a very important part of Roman architecture.  Statues of gods and goddesses from Roman mythology were built. Why do you think the Romans created statues of their Gods? Where would these be usually displayed?
