Ciaran Carson Ciaran Gerard Carson (born 9 October 1948) is a Belfast, Northern Ireland-born poet and novelist. Ciaran Carson was born in Belfast into an Irish-speaking family. He writes both poetry and prose, which is often heavily influenced by his Irish roots.

The story of the poem Set in Belfast, the speaker describes a riot on the city centre. Punctuation is used to metaphorically describe the violence. The speaker attempts to flee the riot through the streets of Belfast. The poem ends with a sense of confusion about identity.
