3. Allusion A statement that refers to something without mentioning to it directly Examples: –Stop acting like my father –It has rained so long, it seems as though it has rained for forty days and forty nights

4. Analogy A statement that refers to something without mentioning it directly Examples: –He is like a rock. This means he is steadfast and strong –I feel like a fish out of water

5. Anaphora Type of expression whose reference depends upon another referential element. Examples: –My life is my purpose. My life is my goal. My life is my inspiration –“I want my money right now, right here, all right?”

6. Anecdote A short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person Examples: –When i was your age, Pluto was a planet. we spent a whole day in 4th grade watching videos and discussing how it was the "cold" planet. – I was walking down the sidewalk and I saw a very short man throwing around a baseball with his son, and wondered what my daughter would say and so we get to the playground and i asked what she thought of the man with no legs and she said she thought he was standing in a hole throwing a ball to his son.

8. Apostrophe A punctuation mark ( ’ ) used to indicate either possession or the omission of letters or numbers Examples: –The student’s homework was very easy –The Jones’s house just went up for sale Jones’ is also acceptable
