7 9/14: R.E.S.P.E.C.T pg. What is respect? How does one show respect? How do you gain respect? How does our society view respect? Are you respectful? Who deserves respect? Is respect important?

8 Respect Across Varying Cultures: In India, elders are given priority over younger people in a range of social settings. For example, it is impolite for a young person to be sitting while an elder is standing, in this case, even if there is a free seat, the young person will offer their seat to the elder in concern. Traditionally, shoes are not worn in households in nations such as India, Indonesia, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Philippines, Thailand, and Malaysia, nor in certain holy places elsewhere, such as mosque and many Buddhist or Hindu temples. The typical expectation is that shoes will be removed in the foyer and left neatly with toes pointing outside.

9 Respect Across Varying Cultures: In England, politeness, reserve, and restraint are admired. The English are courteous, unassuming, and are very proud of their long and rich history. Because of this, proper etiquette is expected. For example, it is impolite to rest your elbows on the table during dinner. What other types of etiquette (or manners) can you think of that would demonstrate respect? Handshakes, bowing in many Asian cultures, waiting to eat until everyone has been served, guests of honor are seated at the head of the table, etc. In some cultures, a loud burp following a meal is a sign of appreciation of good food! However, burping would be quite disrespectful in other settings.

11 How does our society address the idea of respect? Respect toward the American Flag: The flag should never touch anything beneath it. Contrary to an urban legend, the flag code does not state that a flag that touches the ground should be burned. Instead, it is considered disrespectful to the flag and the flag in question should be moved in such a manner so it is not touching the ground. Respect is given to those serving in our military, regardless of personal views toward war. Eye contact is a sign of respect Using words like “Please, Thank you, Good morning,” etc. SMILE
