Earth Science Unit Overview: Chapter 4 – Earth’s Water Lesson 1 – Earth: The Blue Planet Lesson 2 – The Water Cycle Lesson 3 – Fresh Water Resources Lesson 4 – California’s Water Supply Chapter 5 – Earth’s Weather Lesson 1 – Earth’s Atmosphere Lesson 2 – Air Current and Wind Lesson 3 – Ocean’s and Air Temperature Lesson 4 – Severe Weather Lesson 5 – Predicting Weather Chapter 6 – The Solar System Lesson 1 – The Sun Lesson 2 – The Structure of the Solar System Lesson 3 – Gravity and Orbit

Oceans and Air Temperature Lesson Overview: 1) What do we already know? (BrainPop)BrainPop 2) Vocabulary 3) Drawings 4) Main Ideas 5) Review Earth’s Weather: Lesson 3

Oceans and Air Temperature What do we already know? BrainPOP Teaser BrainPOP Teaser 1)Why are temperatures different around the world? a) The sun shines more at the equator than the poles (angle of the sun) and land and water gain and lose heat differently. 2)How do land and water temperatures affect air pressure? a) Land warms the air which lowers air pressure and water cools the air down which increases air pressure during the day. The opposite occurs at night. 3) What are global winds? a) Steadily blowing winds that blow predictable direction. Page 1 Earth’s Weather: Lesson 3

Oceans and Air Temperature: Vocabulary Part I 1)climate: is the average weather condition of a place or region 2) current: an ongoing movement of water Page 2 Earth’s Weather: Lesson 3

Oceans and Air Temperature: Main Ideas 1)How do oceans affect temperature on land? (pg. 254-255)  a) The ocean temperature does not change much from day to night or season to season. This allows temperature on nearby land to stay consistent all year round. Quick Check (pg. 255) -Critical Thinking: What is the climate like where you live?  a) We are half way between the ocean and the desert. Since we are cooled slightly by the ocean we are cooler than the desert and warmer than the ocean. Page 6 Earth’s Weather: Lesson 3

2) What are ocean currents? (pg. 256-257)  a) An on going movement of ocean water. They move heat around the world in the oceans and they also move heat in the atmosphere through water vapors. Quick Check (pg. 257) -Critical thinking: How much rainfall would you expect on an area near the gulf stream?  a) Rainy Page 7 Earth’s Weather: Lesson 3 Oceans and Air Temperature: Main Ideas
