9. 6FPW OP Strep: Superpeer Semantic Search Engine - ALVIS The ALVIS project is concerned with design of a new, topic-specific search engines with the goal of developing an open source prototype of a distributed, semantic-based search engine. The consortium of several European research centers aim at providing better foundation for semantic web operations, and at the same time provide a European reply to monopolistic US companies such as Google that distort the entire information landscape. The research engine will be based on content through automatic analysis. Linguistic processing will be inside the search engine and a probabilistic document model will provide a principled evaluation of relevance to complement existing standard authority scores. This will facilitate semantic retrieval and incorporate pre-existing domain ontologies using facilities for import and maintenance. The combination of design goals, the distributed operation and open source development have been chosen to support incremental growth, third-party involvement, low barrier to entry, and next provide a small degradation of quality in results over an equivalent monolithic system.

10. Another 6FWP IST WINDECT-506746-STP: Wireless Local Area Network with Integration of Professional Quality DECT Telephony will push standardization of Telephony over Wireless LAN. The aim of the project is to merge wireless LAN and DECT cordless telephony networks by integrating professional quality telephony into WLANs thus satisfying the huge demand for communication systems to meet the high-speed, high- quality requirements.
