History First Carolina Settlement Originally named “Charles Town” after King Charles II Established in 1670 In 1770, Charleston became the textile and economic capital of the south Fort Sumter became a key element in the Civil War In 1886 Charleston was nearly destroyed by an earthquake The “Charleston Dance” became popular in the 1920’s Hurricane Hugo hit Charleston in 1989 Charleston is now a popular tourist destination
