4 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Enable the presentation of educational material at the exam – Oral hygiene practices Tooth brushing Flossing – Dietary education Healthy choices – Healthy snacks – Healthy beverages

5 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Diagnostic procedures including exam and radiographs would diagnose decay that would then lead to a treatment plan. A treatment plan can help in initiating needed treatment for active decay

6 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Assist In Establishing a Dental Home 25% percent of children account for 80% of all caries. – Caries at this stage of life can affect a child’s development, nutritional status, and quality of life for the moment and future. (1) – Tooth decay is the single most common chronic disease affecting children in the United States (2).

7 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Would assist in early detection of caries to be treated in a less invasive manner Untreated caries in data from 1986-1987 found: 28 % of 6 to 8 yr olds with untreated caries (4) 24% of 15yr olds with untreated caries (4)

8 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Help in minimizing and potentially eliminate caries prevalence – Data from 1986-1987 showed 6 to 8 yr olds with caries prevalence at 54% (4) – Date from 1986-1987 showed 15 year olds with caries prevalence of 78% (4)

9 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Would assist in early detection of caries to treated in a less invasive manner – Data from 1988 - 1994 illustrates that active decay was found Children ages 2-4 at 16% (4) Children ages 6-8 at 29% (4) Children ages 15 at 20% (4)

10 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Help to reduce caries prevalence – Caries in permanent teeth has a been shown to increase with age 26% among persons aged 5 - 11 years (2) 67% among persons aged 12 - 17 years (2) 90% of caries in permanent teeth of children occur on tooth surfaces with pits and fissures, and approximately two thirds are on the chewing surfaces alone. (3)

11 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Assist in diminishing the increase rate of caries with age. – Data from 1988-1994 shows Children of ages 2 – 4 with evidence of having had decay at 18%. (4) Children of ages 6 – 8 with evidence of having had decay at 52%.(4) Children of ages 15 with evidence of having had decay at 61%. (4)

12 Requiring a Dental Examination Would Assist in establishing a dental home for future preventative and restorative treatment. – Data from 1986-1987 shows that 75% of children of 5 years of age visited the dentists once within the last year. This could be due to entrance requirement s for kindergarten(4) – Data from 1986 – 1987 shows that 73% of children from ages 2 to 17 visited the dentist once within the past year. (4)
