4. Step 3) Number the carbon 1-7 starting with the end closest to the functional group Note: If the functional group is on the middle of the chain then you can measure from either end 4 3 2 1

5. Step 4) State where the functional group is In this example it is on carbon 4 = 4-methylheptane
