2. Revising Character Sketch September 8, 2011 1. Sentence. The word dinosaur means “terrible lizard.” 2. Fragment. Dinosaurs weighed thousands of pounds. 3. Sentence. Dinosaurs had huge jaws and sharp teeth. 1.Some teachers do not assign homework. 2.Others give students hours of homework. 3.Family time is important to many parents. 4.Many students spend over two hours a night on homework. 5.One grade school in California has a different program. 12 Warm up Part A: Check your answers for your homework. Part B: What was your score out of 10 on the homework? Reflect on your score. (For example: What part do you need to review? What part did you really understand? Etc.)

3. Peer Details Questions Rotate spirals within your groups. Use the post it notes to ask three clarifying questions that will help your colleagues add details to the character sketches. Example: If my partner’s character sketch had a section that said, “My hero is really fast. He runs really fast to help save people from evil people.” A clarifying question might be, “How fast is really fast? Can you compare it to something?” Place the post it notes on page 12 of your colleagues’ spiral and hand it back.

4. Word Choice Revision Word Choice is… The author’s use of exact words to express meaning. Banned Words Activity Create two columns. Write each banned word and at least one alternative. Leave some space at the bottom of page 12 for the reflection 12

5. Reflection Do you think replacing the banned words will make your character sketch a better piece of writing? Explain. Homework : Replace all of the banned words in your character sketches. You can use a different color pen to cross out the words and write new ones in the margins. 12
