Lecture №1 Theme: “Introduction to management: changing environment”
2
Lecture objectives Define the term management, and explain the managerial significance of the terms effectiveness and efficiency. Identify and summarize five major sources of change for today’s managers. Distinguish between managerial functions and skills, and identify the eight basic managerial functions.
3
Definition Management is the process of working with and through others to achieve organizational objectives in a changing environment. Central to this process is the effective and efficient use of limited resources.
4
Five components of this definition require closer examination: (1) working with and through others, (2) achieving organizational objectives, (3) balancing effectiveness and efficiency, (4) making the most of limited resources, and (5) coping with a changing environment
5
Management is, above all else, a social process. Many collective purposes bring individuals together—building cars, providing emergency health care, publishing books, and on and on. But in all cases, managers are responsible for getting things done by working with and through others. Aspiring managers who do not interact well with others hamper their careers. This was the conclusion two experts reached following interviews with 62 executives from the United States, the United Kingdom, Belgium, Spain, France, Germany,
6
and Italy. Each of the executives was asked to describe two managers whose careers had been derailed. Derailed managers were those who had not lived up to their peers’ and superiors’ high expectations. The derailed managers reportedly had these shortcomings:
7
Problems with interpersonal relationships Failure to meet business objectives Failure to build and lead a team Inability to change and adapt during a transition
8
Effectiveness: a central element in the process of management that entails achieving a stated organizational objective Efficiency: a central element in the process of management that balances the amount of resources used to achieve an objective against what was actually accomplished
