2 Symbolism  Symbol – often an ordinary object, event, person, or animal to which we attach extraordinary meaning and significance  A flag, a rose, an eagle, a skull

3  Public symbols – symbols that always stand for the same thing; owl for wisdom, heart for love  Some symbols have meaning only to the story in which they belong; - mockingjay has no meaning outside of hunger games

4 Allegory  Allegory – a story in which characters, settings, and actions stand for something beyond themselves  Can be read on a literal and a metaphorical level

6 Fable  Fable – short story with a clear moral or message. Animals stand for human archetypes.

7 Satire  Satire - the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices  This is not a parody – parodies are purely for comedic value
