The Numbers! 1886 – U.S. had 60 million people (300 million today) That year, 334,000 immigrants came to the U.S.! Today- More than 1 million immigrants come a year! Many come legally and many illegally … Since 1820, more than 74 Million immigrants have came to the United States!

So why did they come here in the 1800’s? 1. Most Immigrants came from Europe. 2. The industrial Revolution (what the heck is that?) This basically meant that there was lots of factories making things… So people left their farms and moved to the cities. 3. There became a huge rise in Population in Europe. 4. The loss of the potato crop caused a major food shortage in the 1840’s

Did people in the U.S. like the immigrants? No!!!! They feared that we were going to get all the bad and uneducated people from the other countries. They also didn’t want people with different religions and cultures coming here.

Where else did they come from? Most of the immigrants from Europe came to the east coast of the U.S. (New York City, Ellis Island) On the West Coast, Many people from China and Japan came to California. - They really didn’t like these immigrants Because they A) Had strange cultures B) Looked different

Why didn’t they like Immigrants? Any Guesses? They were taking many of the jobs here in the U.S. They were willing to work the “Dangerous” jobs for little money. Like: Factories, Railroads, Shipyards
