WHAT IS IT? Light pollution is when street lights, or any other man made lights, pollute the night sky. Types: Light trespass: When unwanted light seeps into house windows. Sky glow: The apparent glow over large cities with a lot light. Glare: Seeing an uncomfortable glare from street lights while driving.

LOCATIONS? Mainly located in large cities such as: Hong Kong (Declared worst as of March 2013) Western Europe (France, Netherlands, and Germany) United States (Las Vegas, New York, L.A.) Eastern coast of Brazil India

CAUSES? Advertisement Boards Street Lights and Car Lights Public Places (Airports, Sports Arenas etc.) Neon Lighting Improper Street Lamp Shielding

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSEQUENCES Effects the circadian rhythm in organisms Messing with melatonin (increases risk of cancers) Cost rise to research Milky Way and other solar systems Effecting humans eye sight Effecting animals Nocturnal – need darkness to do normal activities Diurnal – lights at night effect sleep patterns

CONSERVATION Fix your light fixtures Lower the wattage in bulbs used Use environmental friendly lights

COST Incandescent light bulb: $.69 per 100W light bulb LED light bulb: $8.25 per 60W LED light bulb Arizona spends $252 million a year for astronomical equipment.

APPLICABLE LEGISLATION Maricopa County Outdoor Lighting Code Upward facing lights are acceptable as long as it’s not in between the hours of midnight and sunrise. Most notable for the topics not listed. Tucson's 2012 Outdoor Lighting Code Puts a limit on the time and amount of light being used outdoors. Clean Neighborhood and Environment Act Light on your property must shine on only your property. Slovene Law No light shall be above the bottom of the shield.

EXTRA FACTS The lighting from Los Angeles can be seen from a plane, 200 miles away. Known to be one of the top growing pollutions in the world. The U.S. projects around $4.5 billion worth of light that pollutes the sky every year. The atmosphere is now more reflective rather than transparent.
