2 Wave Draw a picture of a wave Tides Draw a picture of Tides Currents Draw a Picture of Currents

3 Wave Cause: Draw and Label a Picture of a wave (crest, trough, wavelength, wave height) Describe why breakers form near the shore TidesCurrents Surface Currents: Cause: Deep Currents: Cause: Draw a picture of upwelling

4 Tides: Tides: caused by the interaction of Earth, the moon, and the sun The moon’s gravity pulls on the water of the side of the earth closest to it more strongly than it pulls on the center of the earth This causes a bulge in the water called a tidal bulge on the side of the earth facing the moon The water farthest from the moon is “left behind” forming a second bulge

6 Tide Cycles Daily Tide: Occurs about every 12 hours and 25 minutes High tide when closest to the moon and farthest away from the moon Monthly Tide Cycle: Changes in the positions of the Earth, Moon, and the sun affect the heights of the tides during a month. Spring Tide: Sun and Moon line up- this combined gravitational pul produces the greatest difference between high and low tide Neap Tide: The sun and Moon are at Right angles (90 degrees)- This makes the tides even out and decreases the difference between high and low tide
