Types of Government Monarchy: Run by one king or queen with ultimate control Tyranny: A government run by one leader who gained power by force Oligarchy: A small group of wealthy people who had ultimate control Democracy: Shared decision making among all citizens

Features of Greek Democracy Citizenship: Only male land owners in Athens were considered citizens Voting: Only free males could vote in Athens Courts: Only male citizens could speak or participate in court. The court had 100 jurors.

Terms to Know… Export: Giving another country a product from your country. Ex. Greece trades olives Import: When your country gets products from another country. Ex. Greece gets grain from countries. Barter: Another word for trading Coins: The money system Greece eventually went to Triremes: Greek war ships Surplus: An over supply of something

Greek Gods Zeus: King of the gods Poseidon: god of the sea Hades: god of the underworld Athena: goddess of wisdom Aphrodite: goddess of love Apollo: god of light, truth, and healing Hera: Queen of the gods

Run by a Democracy Male landowners were citizens The navy was their strongest weapon Emphasis was on the development of the mind, body, and soul Male citizens were farmers, traders, merchants, and politicians Boys were educated at school Girls did not participate in public life

Emphasis was strong on military power Men and women were considered citizens Women participated in athletic contests Run by an oligarchy Boys were raised by soldiers Their strength was their army
