Please take a moment to orient yourself to the control panel: 1) The audio section tells you how you are connected in this webinar. If you are on the phone and watching computer, the telephone button should be checked. If you are using built in mic and speakers, the mic and speakers option should be checked. 2) Audio control to mute and unmute yourself is here. 3
Discussion to start 1) What do you want to get out of this webinar? 2) What are the specific challenges you face with your tier 2 changes and implementation?
4
Implementation and Sustainability Tier I is no longer about IMPLEMENTATION Tier I is now about SUSTAINABILITY or maintaining the work and growth that took place as you were implementing Tier 2 will utilize this structure for collaboration
5
Putting Tier 2 and 3 in Context Behavior support is the redesign of environments, not the redesign of individuals. Reframe thinking from “the student can’t or won’t” to… building behavioral fluency by adding layers of support
6
Advanced Tier Supports Layered on tier I school-wide and classroom systems (not in place of) Intended to provide: Increased instruction Increased behavioral feedback Increased acknowledgement Fluency-building opportunities Positive connections
7
Tier 1/Universal School-Wide Assessment School-Wide Prevention Systems Check-in/Check-out (CICO) Group intervention with individualized feature Brief Functional Behavior Assessment/ Behavior Intervention Planning (FBA/BIP) Complex or multiple-domain FBA/BIP Wraparound/RENEW Social/Academic Instructional Groups (SAIG) There is a Continuum of Support (ordered by intensity of intervention & effort needed to implement) Illinois PBIS Network, Revised October 2009 Adapted from T. Scott, 2004 Tier 2/ Secondary Tier 3/ Tertiary Intervention Increasing intensity of intervention REQUIRES increase in family engagement AND assessment
8
Intervention Fidelity Students cannot benefit from interventions they do not experience. (Dean Fixsen, Karen Blase, Robert Horner, George Sugai, 2008) Before assuming that a student is not responding to an intervention because of something within the student, teams must ensure that interventions are being delivered with fidelity. Interventions are intended to help build behavioral fluency AND help students generalize the skills.
9
Why do Secondary/Tier II Group Interventions Work? Improved structure Increased practice during the day Increased connections to adults and to school Increased acknowledgement Feedback is tied to student behavior Inappropriate behavior is less likely to be ignored or rewarded Linking school and home support Emphasis on self-management
10
Some “Big Picture” Challenges Mismatch of behavior and intervention Low intensity, low fidelity interventions for behavior/emotional needs (we haven’t done this...) Habitual use of restrictive settings (and poor outcomes) for youth with disabilities High rate of undiagnosed mental health problems (stigma, lack of knowledge, etc.) Changing the routines of ineffective practices (systems) that are “familiar” to systems
11
Open discussion Intent of tier 2 and 3 need to be reflected in the mission and vision/values of a school for successful implementation. This means LIVED day to day and not just words on paper. What are the advantages of this? What are barriers? What can be done to maximize or address these?
12
Networking What do you have going in your building that you are proud of that is strengthening your universal or tier 2?
13
Closing Future sessions are on the Wisconsin PBIS Network website in upcoming events. Please email us with any feedback you have about these sessions. They are new and we are interested in data from you on usefulness. – smithk@wisconsinpbisnetwork.org smithk@wisconsinpbisnetwork.org – cameronl@wisconsinpbisnetwork.org cameronl@wisconsinpbisnetwork.org
