Lessons Aimed At Helping Saints Define, Describe, & Defeat Sin

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions  We previously discussed his sinful deeds and inappropriate behavior [pgs. 9, 11]  Using what he was inspired to write, this lesson emphasizes his proper reactions once he repented 2 Sam 12:13

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions  Psa 51 perhaps written in the aftermath of Nathan’s rebuke (in the “process” of his repentance)  Psa 32 perhaps written after gaining assurance of God’s forgiveness

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 51  His description of his actions  He called what he did with Bathsheba a “transgression” vv, 1, 3  It was “iniquity” & “sin” v. 2  It was “evil in God’s sight” v. 4 2 Sam 11:27b

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 51  His feelings re: his actions  His sin was “ever before him” v. 3b  He felt his actions were “against God, and Him alone” v. 4a  He felt “broken” & unable to feel/hear gladness and joy v. 8 Before Nathan’s rebuke, David obviously felt nothing.

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 51  What he desired  He wanted a measure of God’s grace and compassion v. 1  He wanted to be “washed” & “cleansed” from his iniquity v. 2 Acts 22:16 1 Jn 1:9

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 51  What he knew his sins prevented  He realized he could not enjoy fellowship with God if he didn’t take care of his sin problem v. 11  He knew he couldn’t teach and convert transgressors while in sin v. 13

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 51  What he knew his sins prevented  He also felt his sins would prevent his worship of God vv. 14-19  The answer was not more sacrifices  The answer was contrition…then acts of worship Joel 2:12-13

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  Apparently written after Psalm 51  He had expressed a desire to teach transgressors Psa 51:13  This psalm appears to be his efforts to do this very thing [A “maskil”]

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  The joys of being forgiven & cleansed  He expresses the joys of knowing what it feels like to be pardoned v. 1  He also praises God for not imputing (putting to his account) his sin v. 2 Rom 4:7-8

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  David’s efforts to “cover” his sin centered on more sin 2 Sam 11:6-17  God’s efforts to “cover” David’s sin centered on forgiveness based on David’s genuine repentance

Progression Of Thought Psa 32:1-2 DAVID  “Transgression” (rebellion)  “Sin” (miss a mark; wander off)  “Iniquity” (depravity; moral departure) GOD  “Forgiven” (taken away; remove)  “Sin” (hide, conceal offensive)  “Not impute” (not count; cancel bad debt)

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  For a while, David chose to “deny” or “ignore” what he did to Bathsheba and Uriah vv. 3-4 >  This only brought misery & anguish... both physically & mentally (emotionally)

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  David had to acknowledge his sin v. 5  Only then could he enjoy God’s forgiving nature and the reassurance of being accepted by Him v. 7

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin David’s good reactions Psalm 32  Sorrows result when wickedness is man’s choice…God’s loving-kindness results when one decides to trust in God and honestly deal with his sin v. 10

Lesson 8 – Reacting To Sin  Based on all these statements David wrote, how do we think he would answer the following questions? Ê Was it worth it? Ë Was it successful? Ì Would I do it again?
