By: Mitchell Miller Chemical Reactions are a change in substance and a change in energy mainly affecting the atoms electrons http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science/sciber00/8th/matter/sciber/c hemtype.htm
2
A chemical reaction happens when molecules interact causing a chemical change. This change means that the molecules that interacted are combined to form something different. During this a reactant (a substance or compound consumed during a chemical reaction) is consumed creating a product (a substance that forms as a result of a chemical reaction) that has the same mass as the product according to the law of conservation of mass which states that the mass of an isolated system will remain constant no matter what happens inside. http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/e arth/geology/chem_reactions.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Product_(che mistry) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reagent

Synthesis Decomposition Combustion Single replacement Double replacement Each of these can exothermic or endothermic During a reaction something happens with the energy making it endothermic or exothermic: Endothermic- Energy is absorbed (often it is heat or electrical energy) Exothermic- Energy is released from the reactants often resulting in a heat increase http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science/s ciber00/8th/mattr/sciber/chemtype.htm

During a reaction something happens with the energy making it endothermic or exothermic: Endothermic- Energy is absorbed (often it is heat or electrical energy) Exothermic- Energy is released from the reactants often resulting in a heat increase Potential Energy is the stored energy of position possessed by an object such as a rubber band when left to sit it has no energy, but when stretch it has gained energy. http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science/s ciber00/8th/mattr/sciber/chemtype.htm http://www.glenbrook.k12.il.us/gbssci/phys/ Class/energy/u5l1b.html

This reaction is when two or more simple substances combine to create a more complex substance http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science/s ciber00/8th/mattr/sciber/chemtype.htm A Synthesis reaction would look something like: A + B → AB meaning A plus B combined equal A and B http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_synt hesis
7
This reaction is when a complex reaction is broken into a smaller less complex parts. Basically the opposite of a synthesis http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science /sciber00/8th/mattr/sciber/chemtype.ht m A decomposition reaction would look something like AB → A + B meaning AB is broken down into just A and B http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_dec omposition

Single replacement is a reaction where a single uncombined element replaces another in a compound. A double Replacement is a reaction where parts of two compounds swap places to form two different compounds. Chemical formula example of single replacement Chemical formula example of a double replacement http://www.usoe.k12.ut.us/CURR/Science/s ciber00/8th/mattr/sciber/chemtype.htm A Single replacement reaction formula would look something like A + BX → AX + B meaning the A has swapped with the B http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_re placement_reaction A double reaction formula would look like AB + CD → AD + CB meaning the B and the D swapped places http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_re placement_reaction
