3
John 17 The Great High Priestly Prayer of our Lord!
4
John 17:20-26 Jesus Prays for the Church!
5
John 17:24 We will behold the Glory of our Lord!
6
John 17:24c, “So that they would keep on beholding (with understanding) My glory which You have given to Me.”
7
“See” or “Behold” - THEOREO: Present, Active, Subjunctive, 3 rd P. P., “To be a spectator, look at, behold, perceive, and to observe with interest and attention.”
8
BDAG: “To come to the understanding of something”, and specifically, “of the spiritual perception of the one sent by God (Jesus Christ), which is possible only to the believer.”
9
THEOREO = to observe it, understand it, perceive it, etc.
10
Jesus desires that the believers of the Church Age “see” Him as He truly is in all His Deified glory coupled with the glory He has received in His humanity in resurrection form.
11
Only believers will be able to see this glory of the hypostatic union when we receive our interim heavenly body and our final resurrection body.
12
“My Glory” The Glory of Jesus Christ in hypostatic union is what we will observe and understand in the eternal state.
13
Principles: 1. As in vs 22, there are three kinds of glory which are found in these passages.
14
a. First, Phase One glory at salvation; the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
15
a. First, Phase One glory at salvation; the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. b. Phase Two glory; the building of your ECS.
16
c. Phase Three glory; the resurrection body, which we will receive at the Rapture of the Church, in ultimate sanctification. 1 Cor 15:20-57; 1 Thes 4:13-17
17
2. The glory Jesus Christ received in vs 24 is the result of His strategic victory of the Angelic Conflict, Luke 24:26; John 12:20-24, 28; 13:31-32; Heb 2:10; 1 Peter 1:10-11.
18
Luke 24:26, “Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?”
19
John 12:20-24, “And Jesus answered them, saying, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit’.”
20
1 Peter 1:10-11, “As to this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that would come to you made careful searches and inquiries, 11 seeking to know what person or time the Spirit of Christ within them was indicating as He predicted the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow.”
21
3. The Humanity of Jesus Christ is glorified because He fulfilled the Father’s Plan of Salvation. His work on earth is completed and He has sat down. Heb 1:3-4
22
4. God brings many sons into an eternal relationship with His glory because of the work of His Son. Heb 2:10, “Led to glory many sons.”
23
a. When we believe in Christ we receive the imputation of God’s perfect righteousness and are made holy, which is the potential for blessing from the integrity of God.
24
This is what Jesus meant in John 17:22, referencing the glory we will receive in resurrection body.
25
5. Ultimately God the Father is the source of our Lord’s glorification, John 13:31-32.
26
John 13:31-32, “Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him; 32 if God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.”
27
a. The Father then seated Jesus Christ in hypostatic union at His right hand in glory for all of eternity. Eph 1:20
28
Eph 1:20, “Which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places.”
29
6. Jesus’ glorification speaks of the unity of “being” between the Father and Son, cf. John 17:5, “glorify Me together with Yourself.”
30
7. 1 Tim 3:16, “Christ taken up into the place of glory”; refers to the third heaven where Christ is seated at the right hand of God in glory.
31
8. The Royal Family is called to eternal glory since Christ is seated in the place of glory. 1 Peter 5:10; 2 Peter 1:3; Cf. Mat 19:28.
32
Mat 19:28, “And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne...”
33
9. Our resurrection bodies are described in terms of glory. 1 Cor 15:43
34
a. We will live forever in a state of glory, and will be able to fully observe and comprehend the glory of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, as well as our own glory.
35
b. In 2 Thes 2:14, “the attainment of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ”, refers to having a resurrection body exactly like His.
36
In like bodies we will be able to have a face to face relationship with our Lord in all of His glory, 1 Cor 13:12, having a complete understanding of His glory.
