1 Are some laws meant to be broken? Learning Objective: Are some laws meant to be broken? I can evaluate whether some laws should be broken? I can give two examples of people who have broken the law to get a bad law changed I can use a Christian quote to show that bad laws should be challenged.

2 When laws should be broken… “We must obey God rather than human beings!” What happened? After Jesus had ascended to heaven his disciples continued to spread the message that Jesus had resurrected and spread his teachings. This got the disciples into trouble with the Romans who had forbidden people to preach about Jesus. To this, Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples replied that it is God they obey rather than human beings. What does this mean for Christians today? This shows Christians today that if there are bad or unjust laws they can be broken. They could also break laws if they do not meet with Christian teachings e.g. on equality.

4 People who have broken unjust laws… Rosa Parks On December 1, 1955, during a typical evening rush hour in Montgomery, Alabama, a 42-year-old woman took a seat on the bus on her way home from the Montgomery Fair department store where she worked as a seamstress. Before she reached her destination, she quietly set off a social revolution when the bus driver instructed her to move back, and she refused. Rosa Parks, an African American, was arrested that day for violating a city law requiring racial segregation of public buses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8A9gvb5Fh0

5 People who have broken unjust laws… Miep Gies During the Second World War, Miep Gies, along with Johannes Kleiman, Victor Kugler, Bep Voskuijl, Jan Gies and Johan Voskuijl, made up a team of helpers for the eight Jewish people hiding in the Secret Annex at Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam. The office of Otto Frank, where Miep worked as secretary, was located at the front side of the same building. Following the betrayal and the deportation of the hiders, Miep and her colleague Bep made sure that the diary of the youngest of the group, Anne Frank, did not fall into the hands of the German occupier. Miep stored Anne's writings in a drawer of her desk, unread, and gave them to Anne's father when he returned after the war, as the only survivor of the concentration camps. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjGIJPE8B8I
