MIXTURES AND COMPOUNDS
2
Types of Mixtures Two types of mixtures exist 1. Homogeneous Uniform in nature Cannot tell that it is a mixture by just looking at it Said to have 1 phase Called Solutions CANNOT USE FILTRATION TO SEPARATE IT!!!!!
4
Types of mixtures continued 2. Heterogeneous Not uniform in nature Can clearly see all of the parts of the mixture Said to have 2 or more phases depending on how many things are mixed together
5
How to Separate a Mixture 1. Evaporation 2. Boil 3. Use Filtration (For heterogeneous mixtures only!!!) 4. Distillation (Liquid Mixtures only) Separation by difference in boiling points) 5. Separation by density 6. Chromatography
6
Element Vs. Compound 1. Element Simplest form of matter Cannot be broken down any further Used as the building blocks for all things in nature
7
Compound Formed from the combination of 2 or more elements Will have unique properties that are different from the elements that created it Can be broken down into the component elements Formula is in a definite ratio
