2 Beliefs:  Active exploration creates better results  There are many options out there, no one right option or process  There is a college/program for everyone, if that is what you want to do Questions to Consider:  Where do I see myself after high school?  How do I gather the information I need to make an informed decision?  What are the necessary requirements and steps for applying to most colleges? ENDURING UNDERSTANDING & ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

3 THE JUNIOR APPOINTMENT Students make a 40-minute appointment during a free period beginning on 2/20 Discuss post grad plans Review transcript (mailed home w/1 st semester report cards) for graduation requirements/credits Plan a meaningful senior year! Review timeline for college search Discuss testing options Introduce to Naviance

6 TESTING When to take college entrance exams? This spring and again in the fall of the senior year ACT or SAT? Compare PSAT with PLAN results About 1/3 do better on the ACT, 1/3 do better on the SAT, and 1/3 of students do about the same on both. Either test is accepted by colleges SAT II-Subject tests Test prep courses? Test optional colleges check out: www.fairtest.orgwww.fairtest.org

7 TO VISIT OR NOT TO VISIT Let them know you were there Take notes Tour and Interview (if available) when the school is in session Eat in the cafeteria Ask questions Check your gut Geographical advantage Visit after admission decisions are made

8 PARENT’S JOB Help plan tours/college visits Set up a regular check-in time Help create a system to track the process. Be a cheerleader!

9 STUDENT’S JOB Take time to consider who you are and what you want/need next Research your options See your counselor (Jr. and Sr. app’ts) Be curious Have fun with this
