4 a. Armed Conflict Question: Why would any group resort to violence to get what they want? Question: How did the conflict in Sri Lanka become so violent?

5 1950 Tamils made peaceful demands to be treated fairly before 1950 The Federal Party (one of the Tamil political parties) asked for Tamil areas to be recognised as a federation 1976 Formed Tamil United Liberation Front. Asked for a separate independent state. (Tamil Eelam) After idea for separated state was rejected, Tamils became angry and dissatisfied with government. Tamil youths formed the LTTE, as non- violent methods were not effective. Armed Conflict! Timeline of Conflict

9 List of Terrorist Acts in 2007 March 29March 29, Killed five Indian fisherman off the coast of Tamil Nadu and kidnap twelve others. April 1April 1, Killed six aid workers who were constructing a housing scheme named "Village of Hope" for Tamil children orphaned by the 2004 Asian Tsunami. Another three aid workers suffer serious gunshot injuries. April 12April 12, Raided a village in Avarantalawa, Vavuniya and shoot dead seven people. May 28May 28, : Planted a bomb in Rathmalana targeting a truck carrying Sri Lanka Police personnel killing seven civilians and injuring more than 39 people. Amongst dead were one pregnant mother.

13 -India attempted to play the role of mediator between Sinhalese and Tamils -1st attempt: 1983 - Dialogue between the 2 parties -Outcome? – Parties could not come to an agreement -2 nd attempt: 1987 – India pressured Sri Lanka to sign a peace accord -Outcome? – Although peace accord was signed, Tamil Tigers did not disarm and Indian troops took control by force. Fighting continued.

Unemployment -Massive unemployment due to the riots in 1983 -Factory workers, self-employed and plantation workers lost their jobs (from all sections of society) -Looting & vandalism of shops and offices took place. How does this affect Sri Lanka? What impact does it have on the country and its people?

16 b. Loss of Investments from other countries What is Foreign Investment? - Investment (money or other resources) provided by other countries Question – Would you want to invest resources in country that has conflict and is not stable? Why would you not want to invest in an unstable country?

17 c. Fall in number of tourists -Sri Lanka depends heavily on tourism for country’s earnings Drop in number of tourists Loss of jobs & Fall in country’s earnings Fall in amount spent on improving country -Development of amenities - Spending on transport & housing

18 Social Consequence a.Sri Lankan Tamils driven out from homeland -Fleeing of thousands of Tamils to Tamil Nadu in India (refugees) -1990s, High Security Zone (HSZ) were set up by the Sri Lankan army to kept LTTE away. -HSZ monitored closely and access is controlled
