8. Linking Verbs A verb that links a subject to a description. –He is a general for the North. –The winners were Tony and I. –He looks tired from all the fighting. These verbs also show that something exists (e.g., is, seems, feels) “Be” forms are the most common. The forms are: –Am, is, are, was, were Example linking verbs— –Feel--Appear--Turn –Taste--Grow--Seem –Look--Remain--Sound –Smell--Stay

9. Helping Verbs Help to make verb phrases: –A verb phrase = Helping Verb(s) + Action Verb –VP = HV + AV Many different types exist Can use one or more helping verbs –does find –had gone –should see –will have talked –might have told Make sure you find the WHOLE verb phrase if it asks for it!!
