Construction Unit 5, Lesson 3 Explanation Presentation 5.3.1 © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

The Unit Big Idea The designed world is the product of a design process, which provides ways to turn resources - materials, tools and machines, people, information, energy, capital, and time - into products and services. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Infrastructure  n·fra·struc·ture (nfr-strkchr)n.1. An underlying base or foundation especially for an organization or system.  2. The basic facilities, services, and installations needed for the functioning of a community or society, such as transportation and communications systems, water and power lines, and public institutions including schools, post offices, and prisons.

The Lesson Big Idea Construction is the systematic process of erecting structures to meet human needs and desires using specific processes related to available resources. © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Construction Processes  Preparing the site  Setting foundations  Building the framework  Enclosing the structure  Installing utilities  Finishing the exterior  Completing the site © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Processes & Procedures  Based on:  Mathematical calculations  Scale drawings © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Processes & Procedures  Based on:  Scientific principles (Can you name others?)  Electrical; high/low voltage service, Ohm’s Law  Plumbing; volume, rates of water flow  HVAC; heating and cooling by convection & conduction © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Processes & Procedures  Also based on availability of resources  Material; wood, adobe, timber frame, stone,  People; one person to a large crew  Equipment; hand tools to large mechanical equipment © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Processes for Residential Structures  Wood frame/Timber frame  Straw bale  Structural Insulating Panels  Insulating Concrete Forms  Adobe/Cob  Earthship © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Research Topics Construction Methods  Types of materials needed  Region of the world where method used  Special skills/training, permits, etc.  Basic steps  Advantages and disadvantages  Provide images © 2011 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association, STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

What is adobe?  Adobe is an ancient building material which is in wide use in many desert regions of the world. It has also experienced a resurgence in popularity in areas of the world where people are concerned about environmentally sustainable architecture, because it is renewable, efficient, and naturally sourced.
