Spatial Analysis of Digital Traces on a University Campus Kal Watts (090290030)
2
Introduction Digital traces are records of activity undertaken in a digital environment. These include tasks such as online activity, phone use, transactions are more. They are commonly used for: -Mapping & tracking infectious disease -keep track of children or employees - Health and Fitness -Improving tourist/visitor experiences
3
Research Question Can we link digital traces obtained from campus vendors and study participants to better understand how students use campus space throughout the day?
4
Data Ethics approval acquired Data was collected through GPS applications on cell phones. Visitor numbers were collected from vendors on campus that could provide hourly data.
5
Methods Collection and analysis of GPS tracks Analysis of Vendor data on ArcMap and Excel January February
6
Analysis Kernel Densities were conducted once the.kml files were converted into shapefiles. Vendor data was normalized and then time-series graphs and scatterplots were created.
7
Results There were changes at each location throughout the study period. Changes were visible throughout each day as well as throughout the week. GPS points portrayed the Arts and Business buildings as highest traffic zones.
8
Mondays
9
Visitor Numbers for Mondays Mondays
11
Limitations and Sources of Error Misplaced points and missing time information Not enough volunteers for gps tracking Drop out rate due to failure of application or usage of data. Some vendors were unable to create reports with the necessary data.
12
Changes for the Future Compare data for previous years and current (next Year) to look at changes with new additions Provide GPS device that records times as well
