Bell Ringer – Which of your Unit 2 Vocab words are depicted below? Explain how each pic. relates to the word. 1. 2. 3.4.
2
The Nervous System Unit II: Biology and Behavior -What is it? -How does it affect our behavior?
3
The Nervous System Will Explain Why We FEEL… Pain Strong Nervous
4
The Nervous System is … A big communication system between the brain and the body. Controls body movement & senses Helps us to gain information that is going on inside and around our body Respond accordingly
5
Neural Transmission - Perceive a stimulus, select a response, execute response
6
Bell-Ringer 1. What symptoms might be displayed if you had a problem/disorder of the Nervous System? Be as specific as possible. 2. Briefly describe a situation when you were really startled or scared. Include how your body felt in this situation. What involuntary reactions did your body have to this scary situation?
7
The Nervous System is … Made up of nerves – strings of long thin cells called neurons. Nerves send messages between the brain and the body.
8
The Nervous System is … Neurons – fundamental unit of the nervous system nerve cell have the ability to communicate with one another
9
Neuron Structure
10
The Nervous System is … Two Parts 1. Central Nervous System (CNS) brain and spinal cord – encased in bone
11
The Nervous System is… 2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Nerves & Neurons Connects the CNS to the body Carries information to and from the brain
12
A “blueprint” of the Nervous System
13
How it affects our behaviors… Sympathetic Nervous System Flight or Fight Response Prepares our body to confront the situation or RUN!
14
How it affects our behaviors… Sympathetic VS. Parasympathetic
15
How it affects our behaviors … neurotransmitters – chemicals released by neurons which help them pass messages. Three important neurotransmitters have a big influence on our feelings and behavior.
16
Serotonin Function deals with mood control. Lack of serotonin has been linked to depression.
17
Dopamine Its function is motor movement and alertness. Lack of dopamine is associated with Parkinson’s disease. Overabundance is associated with schizophrenia.
18
Endorphins Function deals with pain control. Can give a euphoric feeling We become addicted to endorphin causing feelings.
19
Build Your Own Neuron! Working in pairs, you are to build a neuron model using the provided bag of supplies. Label all 6 parts from the list below. Identify on your base paper the functions of all 6 parts. Dendrites Cell body Axon Myelin sheath Axon terminals Neurotransmitters Label each part 2pts. (x6) = 12 Identify each function 3pts. (x6) = 18 Construction/Correct placement =15 Neatness 15 Total pts. 60
