The research was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of OnePath, and is a follow up to 2010’s investigation into the impact of death on the family by Ipsos called ‘Picking Up The Pieces’. The interviews were carried out amongst Australians aged 18+ who have either lost a parent while they were under 18 or in full-time study, or lost a partner while they still have at least one child under 18 or in full-time study. Fieldwork took place between 24th April and 12th May 2015. This study was conducted online amongst members of an opt-in research panel. About the research

By having your estate planning affairs in order, you will reduce the stress your family may experience should you pass away. Estate planning means your wishes will be respected. Without it, there are no guarantees on how your estate will be divided up. If you passed away, would your Will reflect your wishes? Have you nominated a trusted relative or friend your Power of Attorney? Do you have adequate insurance in place to cover expenses like school fees for a few years? Over 42% of families had no warning at all prior to the death There was little to no warning Key Insight 1 64% of families had less than a week’s notice of their spouse or parent dying

The research looked at the finances of those with and without insurance. Those without insurance who rated finances as ‘struggling’ tripled after death. This trend is reversed for those with insurance by the 12% point increase in ‘adequate’ rating of finance. Those with insurance were also less likely to move due to financial pressures at a rate of 1 in 5 compared to 1 in 3 for those with no cover. From comfortable to struggling Key Insight 2 Finances rated ‘Struggling’ before death – 14% Finances rated ‘Struggling’ after death – 47% 1 in 3 moved house No cover Had cover Finances rated ‘Adequate’ before death – 44% 1 in 5 moved house Finances rated ‘Adequate’ after death – 56%

Do not put content on the brand signature area Do not put content on this area 9 The financial and emotional impacts on children and the surviving parent are wide ranging when the other parent passes away. We understand these conversations can be uncomfortable or distressing around what would happen should your partner or a loved one die. As shown by the research, families with life insurance in place to support them had a more stable lifestyle – fewer moved house due to financial pressure. It’s never too early to get your affairs in order. Together we can review your current levels of cover, as well as your estate planning situation to ensure that your family is protected. Summary
