2 IPPE at UCSD Community + Hospital/Institutional IPPE program start January 2007 Students assigned to ten different sites (3 Hospital, 7 Community) Community six weeks, Hospital/Institutional four weeks Program well received by students and preceptors

4 IPPE Challenges Recruitment of Hospital/Institutional sites Incorporation of Service Learning activities into IPPE program Continuation of IPPE activities into the 2 nd year curriculum IPPE + APPE programs within the same institution

6 Ambulatory Care Task Force Update Summer of 2008,UCSD+UCSF APPE program consist of 72 students Number exceeds capacity of current structure of our ambulatory care program Ambulatory Care Task Force convened in September 2006 Task Force consists of representatives from Navy, VA, Kaiser, and UCSD Charge for Task Force is to develop new Amb Care structure to accommodate increased numbers

7 Ambulatory Care Task Force Update: Current Proposals Another source of preceptors needs to be identified Possible sources lie within the UCSD residency program and the UCSD ambulatory care staff Possible increased teaching commitments from residents and ambulatory care staff

8 Ambulatory Care Task Force Update: Current Proposals Having outpatient staff and residents involved may require use of distance precepting Consider decreasing number of varied ambulatory care experiences, focus on one or two Look at possible increased rotation commitment from community partners Arrange meetings between UCSD residency and ambulatory care leadership

9 Student Request for Schedule Change Numerous student requests year round Not possible to give each student all desired rotations Responsibility of OEE to assign preceptors, sites Students are not to contact preceptors about rotation availability

10 Student Request for Schedule Change Once APPE schedule approved, individual students may submit requests via e-mail or writing for specific changes to the OEE Coordinator These requests will be reviewed by OEE staff No changes guaranteed There will be few changes in the rotation schedule once the APPE year commences
