Why People Work We all work at something….we are all human… why do we work??

Basic Reasons for Work Develop a sense of personal meaning and sense of satisfaction. Benefit family Benefit society Kenneth B. Hoyt: “We work to discover both who we are and why we are.”

Work for Survival For money to meet basic survival needs. Food Shelter Clothing Transportation Medical care

Work to Define Self For many, their identity is defined by occupation. “I am a teacher” vs. “I am creative” Value inherent in occupation or position. Can be dangerous to self esteem with loss of position.

Work for Security For many, not enough love or approval gained from personal relationships. Occupation can be constant source of security and pleasure or satisfaction when home may be uncertain or volatile.

Work for Self-Respect Or to feel competent and powerful Doing a job well can be a way for an individual to have some control over a big world. This provides a sense of self-respect, even with a job that is not of high status.

Work to Conquer Time Allows us to fill each day with achievement or accomplishments. Experiences in an occupation become a significant life experience.

Work to Measure Self-Worth One way of comparing ourselves to others to determine how we “stack up”. We feel good about ourselves when we succeed at difficult tasks that others cannot. We feel good about ourselves when we are recognized for work that is well done.

True Source of Satisfaction It is not dependent on an occupation. It is not dependent on achievement or the opinions of others. Satisfaction comes from within. From knowing that you made a contribution, that you did your best, that you believe in yourself.
