New World Assignment Most film makers motivated by the bottom line—cash revenues—will quickly sacrifice historical accuracy to produce a movie that will be attractive to the public. The film that you are watching this week, Blackrobe, is something of an exception. Though there are obvious parts in the movie where the director is not faithful to the past, the film as a whole is one of the better representations of the New World/Old World encounter. After reading your two Jesuit accounts of missionary activity in French Canada, select one theme from the readings where you believe the director best captured this interaction of two cultures in the film. In a one to two page essay, closely analyze portions of the text you have read and then describe how they are captured on film. If after viewing the movie, you believe the director made a mess of the past, you can also write a critical assessment of Blackrobe and its faithfulness to the historical narrative.
