#1 Who is Alfred Wegener? Alfred Wegener was a German meteorologist who developed the continental drift theory. He first noticed that the shape of the continents fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Geologists did not believe his theory until 30 years later
5
#2 What is the continental drift theory? The continental drift theory was Alfred Wegener’s idea that over 250 million years ago the Earth was made up of one big landmass that over time eventually drifted into the positions we know today.
6
#2 What evidence did Wegener use to prove his theory. The shape of the continents fit together like puzzle pieces. Fossil remains of mesosaurus(dinosaurs), Glossopteris (tropical plants) found on separate continents. Evidence of climate change Evidence of sea floor spreading Age of Rocks on sea floor
7
#3 What is Pangea? Pangea was called a supercontinent. It was a big landmass containing all of the continents. Alfred Wegener named this supercontinent

4. What is plate tectonics? Plate Tectonics is the theory that Earth is broken up into pieces called tectonic plates. These pieces interact with each other – they converge, diverge, and transform. These interactions create geological events such as earthquakes and volcanoes.
9
#5 What is a boundary? A boundary is the edge of a tectonic plate. Geologic events happen along plate boundaries.

#7 What is seafloor spreading? Sea floor spreading is the event which takes place at divergent boundaries especially the mid ocean ridge. Magma pushes through the earth’s crust spreading the tecontic plates away from each other.
12
#7 What do the ages of the rocks have to do with sea floor spreading Rocks that are found at center of the mid ocean ridge are the youngest (new) The further you move from the mid ocean ridge the older the rock. We know this from magnetic reversals
