Maybe there’s a grant for that… Ann Smith Sioux Falls Public Schools 9 June 2011
2
Do you know where I could get a grant to……
3
Brainstorming: What have you thought you’d like to get a grant to do?
4
First things first Why should what you want matter enough to someone else that they would be willing to pay for it? With a partner, select 1-2 of the grant projects that were identified and come up with a compelling need that the project addresses
5
How much time are you willing to invest? The larger the grant, the greater the time commitment The larger the grant, the more likely there will be a long time between proposal and award Reporting during and after the grant is essential for continued funding
6
Types of Funding Sources Public Federal Government (grants.gov) State Government (doe.sd.gov) Local Governments
7
Types of Funding Sources Private Foundations Corporations Service clubs Faith communities Professional or Trade Associations Service Clubs Special Interest Groups
8
Public Sources AdvantagesDisadvantages Have the most money Opportunities easier to identify Prescribed formats for proposals Firm application deadlines Have the most rules Tend to favor experienced applicants Longer proposals with specific stipulations Political trends affect security and continued availability of funds
9
Private Sources AdvantagesDisadvantages Good for start-up or experimental projects Proposals shorter and simpler Fewer rules for administering funds Usually fewer applicants Continued funding may be hard to secure Average grant size smaller Procedures, deadlines, policies harder to identify May not explain rejection
