Welcome to Year 1 1EB - Mrs Eckard & Mrs Bradley 1T – Miss Thatcher TA’s – Mrs Sturgess, Ms Whalley, and Mrs Moverley

Curriculum Coverage Maths, RWI & Guided Reading are all taught daily. Science, Computing, PSHE and PE are taught weekly. Art, DT, Music, RE, History and Geography are taught through topics.

Classroom Organisation Children will stay with their class teacher for the lesson input before being sent to focussed activities, some of which will be independent. When appropriate the doors will be opened and children will be able to free flow.

Marking Policy

Reading Children will read in a group at least once a week with the class teacher. It’s important that the children have as many opportunities to read as possible, including being read to. They must start to learn the High Frequency words for year 1 & 2.

Spelling Children will be learning spelling patterns in school, relevant to their learning needs and year group. Parents will still be able to support their child at home following the guidance to be given to you this evening. This will not apply to year 1 until the summer term.

Trips There will be a couple of trips throughout the year yet to be arranged. Letters will be sent with arrangements, cost etc. First trip will be to Doncaster Forest School – ‘Stickman’. In the summer term we will go to Yorkshire Wildlife Park as part of our Africa topic.

PE PE will be on Wednesday and Thursday this term. Indoor kit : plain white t-shirt; plain navy, grey or black shorts. In the summer term children will need trainers and outdoor PE kit. Long hair tied back and no earrings.

Uniform White polo t-shirt or shirt, with or without school logo. Black, grey or navy trousers or skirt/dress. No jeans or tracksuit bottoms please.

Expectations of your Child We encourage independence. Making sure the children are able to bring themselves into school and know to hand in dinner money etc. Changing of own reading books (when book is finished). They will have the opportunity to do this everyday, but they will not come home on a Monday.

Communication between home and School Telephone Before or after school Please come to see us, don’t brood over potential issues. Year 1 blog. email

Learning at home Reading Books and high frequency words. Homework will be sent home weekly, unless it is a bigger project in which case more time will be given. This will go out on Friday and be collected in on Tuesday.

Curriculum Expectations To read with some fluency. To write in sentences – encourage this by talking in sentences. To recognise and write numbers to 100. Know number bonds to 10 by heart. Preparation for Y1 phonics screening in June.

Support for children The main support comes from quality first teaching within the class. Interventions will be put in place to support learning for any child that may need this. Interventions are in addition to lessons but held during a timetabled slot for whole school.

How can I support my child? Clear communication between home & school. Regular practise of correct letter and number formation. Regular reading at home. Encourage more responsibility and independence at home.

Positive Behaviour Management Same system throughout school from Nursery to Year 6 - ‘Good to be Green’. Friday activity is a reward for good behaviour. House points. Headteachers certificate for extra good pieces of work. Merit box give out in class each Friday – badge awarded in assembly.
