Risk Factors for Road Traffic Accidents (RTA) in the UAE
The UAE has one of the highest RTA rates in the world. RTA’s are the second major cause of premature death in the UAE-second only to heart disease. Over 50% of the fatalities from RTA were due to excessive speed. Victims of RTA : 80% were below 40 years old; including the 13% who were children. 32.5% of the causalities in 2004 were UAE nationals.
4
Risk Factors Cont:- Disregard of road warning signs and signals.
Changing lanes without due care Dangerous overtaking Driving too close to the vehicle in front Fatigue / Tiredness Distractions whilst driving (mobile phones!) Poor maintenance of vehicles.

Road Accident in UAE Last five year ave.584 peoples have lost their live. 50% of death occurred due to over speeding. If we see the 2002 data 84% were male / 16% were female in which 80% were below 40 / 13% children. As per the Abu Dhabi Police record new data shows the highest accident rate in the world.

DEFENSIVE DRIVING How a Defensive Driver Should be : Always wear your seat belt. Obey all traffic regulations and signs. Maintain your vehicle in good condition. Keep both hands on steering wheel. Plan your route in advance. Adjust your speed for the traffic, road and weather conditions. Learn how to safely enter and merge on limited access highways. Signal your intentions in advance. Make courtesy a habit.( Give way to other road users).

How to adopt a defensive driving attitude?
1. See danger before it happens: Develop that 6th sense - the ability to see potential danger on the road before it happens. Always be alert to the traffic ahead of you, behind you and beside you. Never assume that all is clear and safe. 2. Know how to react to dangerous situations: Each dangerous situation requires a specific defensive driving response. i.e. Braking safely on wet or slippery roads. 3. Take Corrective action in time: Never assume that another driver will do the right thing to prevent an accident. Always assume the worst and take corrective action, before it is too late.

Driving in Fog / High Sand Desert Conditions
DEFENSIVE DRIVING Driving in Fog / High Sand Desert Conditions Ensure the vehicle’s windscreens are clean .(Mist & dust on the outside will prevent clear vision) In fog, condensation accumulates - Clean windscreen internally and put your ‘DEMIST’ heater ON. Dipped head lights must be used, Parking lights only are not enough. Use your wipers to remove the fog from the vehicle’s windscreen. Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead . Fog visibility boards indicate a safe distance, if you cannot see it, then don’t enter the main road. Use of hazard flash lights in fog is only when parked-while driving use fog lights & low beam only. Apply brakes early and gradually avoid swerving due to excessive braking. Use the horn (If required). If you are forced to stop the vehicle, pull off the road and put your hazard warning lights ON.
