BROUGHT TO YOU BY: POWERPOINTPROS.COM What is Poetry?
2
Poetry is defined as: “literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.”
3
What is Poetry? Poetry is a very special type of writing and literature because it doesn’t have to follow all of the rules of writing, unlike most other pieces of writing.
4
Themes in Poetry Poets usually have a theme or topic in mind when they write poetry. Themes/ topics can be something concrete, like a bus, or they can be something abstract, like love or hate. Poems can be about practically anything. They can be serious or funny, short or long, happy or sad—whatever you want them to be!
5
Meaning in Poetry Poets usually have a reason for writing what they write. It is very unlikely that a poet would just say, “Today, I’ll write about muffins!” without a reason for it. Whether the reason be to entertain the reader or convey an opinion or idea, it still is a reason for writing poetry.
6
Complex Poetry Poetry can be very difficult to understand at times. The meaning of some poems may never be understood besides by the poet who wrote them. It is important that you don’t get discouraged if you can’t reveal the meaning of the poem in its entirety, but you should try to understand the basic meaning, if possible. Of course, reading poetry just for fun is okay too!
7
Conclusion So now, you know a little more about poetry (hopefully) than you did already. Of course, poetry is much more than just what was shown in this presentation, as you will soon learn, but, now you know the simplistic answer to the question: “What is Poetry?”
